Fear does not need a distant place to find someone. Friends test their courage in an abandoned house, a child follows a family custom without understanding it, someone familiar begins to change, and even a smiling snowman may hide something better left untouched. Curiosity or one small detail quickly becomes the feeling that an ordinary place can no longer be trusted. People often open the door themselves by dismissing an uneasy instinct, following a custom without asking why, or assuming a familiar face must still belong to the same person. By the time the truth becomes clear, knowing it is far less useful than it would have been one step earlier.
